Erbil expands 24-hour electricity to eight more neighborhoods
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Electricity announced Wednesday that eight additional neighborhoods in Erbil will now receive 24-hour power through the “Runaki”, Light, project.
According to the ministry’s statement, the newly included neighborhoods are Kuran, Rizgari, Kurdistan, Bahar, Krekaren, Azadi, Majidawa, and Rasti, serving more than 28,000 electricity subscribers.
Previously, 24-hour electricity had been provided to several neighborhoods. With this expansion, a total of 13 neighborhoods in Erbil now receive uninterrupted national electricity, covering 50,000 subscribers.
The ministry also stated that technical work has begun in Sulaymaniyah and Duhok governorates, with plans to extend 24-hour electricity to additional neighborhoods in the coming weeks. Some parts of Duhok governorate have had 24-hour grid electricity for more than two years now on a trial basis.
On Oct. 17, Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani launched the “Runaki” project, beginning with Erbil’s Shadi and Naznaz neighborhoods. The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted electricity across the Kurdistan Region by 2026.
“By the end of 2026, every household and business in the Kurdistan Region will have access to 24/7 electricity,” Barzani said at the launch event.
