Man turns himself in after fatally shooting newly married woman in Sulaymaniyah
SULAYMANIYAH – A man who police say fatally shot a newly married woman in the Kani Kurda neighborhood has turned himself in to police, authorities announced Monday.
According to Sulaymaniyah police, the incident occurred late Sunday night outside the victim’s father’s home.
“The suspect surrendered to police and was arrested along with the firearm used in the crime,” police said in a statement.
The suspect, identified as C.A.S., born in 1984, has been charged under Article 406 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment for premeditated murder.
Sulaymaniyah police spokesperson Sarkawt Ahmed told 964media that the suspect is a relative of the woman’s family but not connected to her husband’s side. “He has confessed to the crime, but the motive behind the killing remains unclear,” Ahmed said.
Relatives of the victim, who was born in 1995 and had been married for less than a week, told 964media, “We have our suspicions about who might have done this, but we are waiting for law enforcement to complete their investigation.”
Authorities have not provided further details as the investigation continues.
