Two arrested in Sulaymaniyah under suspicion of drug trafficking

SULAYMANIYAH – The Directorate of Narcotics Control within the Kurdistan Region’s Security Agency has arrested two suspected drug traffickers in possession of seven kilograms of narcotics in Sulaymaniyah.

According to the statement released by the directorate on Sunday, the suspects attempted to transport the drugs from the Sulaymaniyah area to Kirkuk.

“As part of ongoing operations by the Directorate of Narcotics Control, security forces, following an investigation authorized by the judiciary, intercepted the drug transporting attempt,” the statement read.

During the operation, authorities confiscated seven kilograms of marijuana. The suspects are currently charged under Article 25 of the law on combating narcotics and psychotropic substances, and the investigation is ongoing.

“The Kurdistan Region’s Security Agency continues its efforts to arrest drug traffickers in pursuit of a healthier society. With the cooperation and information provided by citizens, as well as the dedication of security officers and personnel, the agency works to prevent the use, trafficking, and distribution of these substances,” the statement concluded.

In a report issued on December 11, 2024, the directorate, responsible for Sulaymaniyah and Halabja governorates, stated that 1,019 individuals had been arrested on drug-related charges over the year.

The report outlined the seizure of more than three tons of various narcotics, including heroin, cocaine, Captagon, crystal meth, opium, hashish, and hallucinogens. Additionally, authorities confiscated 121,330 assorted pills during this period
