Iraqi president to Ukraine’s Zelenskyy at Davos: ‘There are no winners in armed conflict’
NEWSROOM — Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday during the World Economic Forum in Davos, where they discussed regional and international issues, including efforts to “resolve” the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
According to a statement released by his media office, President Rashid affirmed Iraq’s position on “respecting” the sovereignty of nations and called for “peaceful means” to resolve disputes, in line with United Nations resolutions. “There are no winners in armed conflicts,” Rashid stated, emphasizing that even victories come with heavy losses in lives and property.
Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, a major escalation of an ongoing conflict that began in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea following the Ukraine’s Maidan Revolution.

As part of his participation in the World Economic Forum, President Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, at the Congress Center in Davos.
During the meeting, several pivotal regional and international issues were discussed. President Rashid emphasized Iraq’s stance on respecting the sovereignty of states and the necessity of resolving conflicts through peaceful means and adherence to United Nations resolutions. He stated that there are no winners in armed conflict, as victories often come with heavy losses in lives and property. He stressed the importance of utilizing serious international efforts to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The President also noted that Iraq maintains an impartial stance regarding the conflict and expressed Iraq’s readiness to work on bridging the gap between the parties involved.
For his part, President Zelenskyy thanked President Rashid for Iraq’s neutral position on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and expressed Ukraine’s desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the agricultural sector. He highlighted Ukraine’s readiness to supply Iraq with agricultural products, especially wheat, barley, and other crops.
