'To preserve their historical legacy while advancing'

Najaf panel discusses balancing heritage preservation and modernization

NAJAF — A discussion panel was held on Friday at the Union of Writers and Authors building in Najaf to address urban and social changes in the city since 2003, focusing on the importance of preserving its cultural heritage and architectural identity.

Historians, architects, and cultural advocates warned that unchecked urban expansion could threaten the historical character of Najaf, particularly its old city.

Professor Hassan Al-Hakim, a historian of Najaf, emphasized the significance of preserving the heritage buildings within the city’s old walls. Speaking to 964media, he said, “Najaf’s old city holds historical value, with its structures representing a distinct period in time. However, modern developments have erased much of this heritage, overshadowing the city’s unique identity.”

Najaf, located approximately 160 kilometers south of Baghdad, is a city of profound religious and cultural significance, particularly for Shia Muslims. Founded in 791 AD by the Abbasid Caliph Harun Al-Rashid, Najaf is renowned as the burial site of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad, making it a major pilgrimage destination.

He added that while constructing modern high-rises, efforts should be made to protect adjacent heritage sites. “Nations that have achieved great progress, like those in Europe, have managed to preserve their historical legacy while advancing.”

Professor Ali Najy, an engineering faculty member, highlighted the challenges posed by unplanned urban expansion on Najaf’s cultural identity. “The issue we are discussing today is the problem of cultural identity, which is fundamentally linked to the architectural identity and character of historic old cities.”

Najy urged the authorities to prioritize protecting the old city and its historical center, recommending the establishment of a specialized authority to safeguard its unique heritage.

Basim Al-Mo’men, a member of Najaf’s Writers Union, advocated for blending tradition with modernity to preserve the city’s identity. “To maintain the historical character of the city, we must integrate heritage to represent authenticity with modernity to reflect progress and the future,” he said.
