Bitten while leaving school

10-year-old boy dies after stray dog attack in Kirkuk’s Jwan City

KIRKUK — A 10-year-old boy died on Saturday after being attacked by a stray dog Kirkuk’s Jwan City residential complex, a source from the local Health Directorate confirmed.

“We recorded the death of a 10-year-old child as a result of a dog bite in Jwan City,” the source told 964media.

The boy, identified as Aland Ayman Ramzi, a third-grade primary school student, was rushed to the emergency department at Azadi Hospital in critical condition. According to medical reports, he had sustained multiple bites to his face, thigh, and body, which severely deteriorated his health.

“The medical team made extensive efforts to save his life, but he succumbed to his injuries,” the source added.

The child was attacked by the stray dog while leaving school and on his way home.

Stray dog attacks remain a persistent issue in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, sparking increasing demands for action. Last November, a five-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being mauled by stray dogs in Kirkuk’s Marjan City residential area. Despite receiving hours of medical care at Azadi Hospital, the child succumbed to his injuries.

Local authorities in Kirkuk are under increasing pressure to address the growing number of stray dogs in residential areas, particularly to safeguard children. While the municipality has focused on capturing and relocating stray dogs to shelters, limited resources have hindered the effectiveness of these measures.
