Child fatally attacked by stray dogs in Basra’s Safwan

BASRA — A young child from Safwan, west of Basra, died after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs, officials said. The child, born in 2020, sustained severe facial injuries in the incident.

According to an official source who spoke to 964media, the tragedy unfolded while the child was playing in front of his home with other local children. “A child born in 2020 was playing in front of his home in central Safwan with other local children when a pack of stray dogs suddenly attacked them. The other children managed to escape, but the child was left behind and sustained serious facial injuries,” the source explained.

The child was immediately taken to Safwan Hospital to receive emergency medical attention, including a rabies vaccine, but his injuries proved fatal. “His condition deteriorated, and he passed away,” the source added.

Local resident Haytham Walid expressed his concerns about the safety hazards posed by stray dogs in the area. “Stray dogs are widespread in the district, and incidents like this occur frequently,” Walid said. He further commented on the efforts to control the stray dog population, saying, “The veterinary department is doing a good job combating them, but their numbers are overwhelming, posing a danger to children and women in public areas.”

Residents are urging local authorities to launch more aggressive campaigns to address the problem of stray and rabid dogs, aiming to enhance safety and security in the community.
