Iraqi Prime Minister Al-Sudani meets Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei in Tehran
NEWSROOM — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday in Tehran.
The meeting, which included an accompanying Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, was part of an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
A brief statement from Sudani’s media office confirmed the meeting, saying: “Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran.” Similarly, a statement from Khamenei’s office noted, “Imam Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani and his accompanying delegation on the afternoon of Jan. 8, 2025.”
Neither statement provided further details or elaborated on the substance of the talks held during the meeting.
Prior to the meeting, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at Tehran’s Saadabad Palace to discuss key bilateral, regional, and security issues. The meeting emphasized the continuation of joint efforts under previously signed agreements, focusing on fostering partnerships.
According to Sudani’s office, Regional issues, particularly the situation in Syria, were a focal point during the discussions. Both leaders underscored the importance of joint efforts to ensure security, stability, and the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity. The ongoing conflict in Gaza was also addressed, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to working with regional partners to promote calm and long-term stability in the region.
The visit also revisited the agreements signed during Pezeshkian’s visit to Baghdad in September, including plans for rail connectivity to facilitate pilgrim transportation, enhanced border security cooperation, energy sector partnerships, and the development of joint industrial cities, the statement says.
