Police officer accused of harassing woman at market in Anbar’s al-Qaim
ANBAR — Authorities have begun legal proceedings against a police officer accused of harassing a woman at a market in al-Qaim and firing a weapon during the confrontation that followed, the district’s mayor said Monday.
Security camera footage shows the officer approaching and harassing the woman, who was with her daughters, before a passerby intervenes. A fight breaks out and the officer then allegedly fires a weapon he was carrying. Local security sources identified him as a captain in the emergency police.
Mayor Turki Mohammed Khalaf told 964media the officer “represents only himself” and that the case was being pursued under instructions from Anbar Gov. Omar Mishaan al-Dabbous, with local police and security agencies handling it through established legal procedures and an emphasis on accountability.
Officials have not said whether the officer has been arrested or suspended, what charges he faces, whether anyone was hit by the gunfire, or whether the woman or her daughters were harmed.
The district administration convened an emergency meeting with security commanders and administrators of local social media pages, and urged residents not to follow reports it said were intended to create confusion. Khalaf said the situation in the district remained stable.
