Over 100 injuries
Traffic incidents in Tuz Khurmatu resulted in over 40 fatalities this year
TUZ KHURMATU – The annual rate of traffic incidents in Tuz Khurmatu district, Salah Al-Din, has seen a significant increase, with more than 40 fatalities and over 100 injuries recorded this year, according to local traffic authorities.
Ihsan Abbas, a traffic official in Tuz Khurmatu, told 964media that the city’s location along the strategic Kirkuk–Baghdad highway has contributed to the rising number of traffic incidents.
“The heavy traffic pressure on this vital route has led to an increase in accidents, and most of the recorded incidents were caused by speeding,” Abbas stated.
He added that the number of traffic incidents victims in the area has increased by 40% compared to the previous year. In 2024 alone, 112 people have been injured in traffic incidents, while 45 others lost their lives.
Abbas attributed this rise to driver failure to adhere to traffic regulations, reckless driving, and the poor condition of roads in the area.
Tuz Khurmatu serves as a strategic corridor connecting the Kurdistan Region with Baghdad. Traffic accidents frequently occur along this route, and in some cases, incidents are resolved privately between citizens without being officially reported to traffic authorities.
