Sulaymaniyah launches initiative to plant 550 mulberry trees

SULAYMANIYAH – An initiative to plant over 500 mulberry trees was launched on Tuesday in Sulaymaniyah, contributing to ongoing efforts to enhance green spaces and move closer to global environmental standards.

Bahroz Salar, Director of Sulaymaniyah Parks, told 964media that the 550 mulberry trees will be planted across Daban and Soran streets.

“We are actively gathering data on Sulaymaniyah’s green space coverage, and we are very close to meeting international standards, with the city currently achieving approximately 19.5% green coverage,” Salar said.

He also noted that while the process of accurately surveying the city’s trees is challenging, it is estimated that Sulaymaniyah city is home to approximately three million trees and saplings.

Currently, Sulaymaniyah is home to approximately 650 gardens and 12 parks.

To enhance urban greenery, the Kurdistan region officials have required all residential, commercial, and industrial projects without sufficient green spaces to compensate by establishing green areas in alternative locations. According to the KRG’s Environmental Protection and Improvement Board’s guidelines, 25% of the footprint of any development project must consist of green space, which should include a variety of trees.
