Residents rebuild roads in Darbandikhan villages following rain damage

DARBANDIKHAN – Residents of three villages in Sulaymaniyah’s Darbandikhan district, Sraw, Kwerak, and Nawde, have restored their access roads after they were severely damaged by heavy rains and flooding, according to locals.

The residents, who collectively manage a community fund, have used its proceeds to repair critical sections of their roads.

Ferman Abdulrahman, a resident of Sraw, told 964media, “Due to the heavy rains and floods in recent years, many parts of our village roads were destroyed. Several bridges were blocked by debris, causing water to overflow onto the roads during rainstorms.”

Abdulrahman added, “The people of all three villages decided together to allocate money from our monthly contributions to this community fund. We divided the funds fairly and worked on repairing the roads in sections.”

He noted that the neglect of the villages by responsible authorities forced the residents to take matters into their own hands. “Due to the lack of attention from concerned entities and the neglect of our villages, we had no choice but to unite and repair the roads ourselves,” he said.

Using excavators and trucks, residents repaired parts of the roads most severely damaged. However, they acknowledge that more work is needed.

The majority of the residents in Sraw, Kwerak, and Nawde are livestock farmers, and their villages are located in an area known for its natural beauty, which attracts visitors on Fridays and holidays.
