'Major danger'
Residents demand urgent repairs to ‘unsafe’ bridge on Baghdad’s Army Canal expressway
BAGHDAD — Concerns are mounting over the deteriorating condition of a pedestrian bridge on the Army Canal Expressway in Baghdad, where a lack of safety measures has led to several incidents. The steel bridge, which stretches across a waterway, becomes dangerously slippery during rain and lacks protective railings, creating hazards for users day and night. Residents are calling for swift revamps or a safer alternative.
“This bridge poses a major danger, especially during rainy weather,” said Mustafa Hadi, a local resident. “The metal surface becomes extremely slippery, and there are no railings for protection. Recently, two people fell into the water, including a woman who was rescued by young men in the area.”
The bridge, heavily used by locals and employees visiting the Rustamiyah Traffic Directorate, has become a pressing concern for the elderly. “We urge the authorities to provide a safer crossing or repair the current one, especially for senior citizens,” Hadi added.
Another resident, Malik Jabr, described the challenges faced while crossing the bridge. “During my visit to the Rustamiyah Traffic Directorate, I felt dizzy because there are no safety features on this bridge. Sometimes I need to hold onto my son for support,” he explained. “We call on the authorities to build a safer passage to facilitate movement for citizens and visitors.”
Responding to public outcry, Baghdad Municipality spokesperson Mohammed Al-Rubaie emphasized the city’s commitment to addressing the issue. “Under directives from the Prime Minister and the Secretary-General of the Municipality, the Baghdad Municipality has begun overseeing the development of the Army Canal, which spans 36 kilometers,” Al-Rubaie stated.
He detailed plans to alleviate traffic congestion and rehabilitate tunnels, bridges, shoulders, and the canal basin. “Funding has been approved, and work will begin at the start of next year. Regarding the unsafe iron bridge, we will expedite repairs as soon as possible. This issue will be closely monitored by the relevant municipal officials,” he assured.
