Addressing suicide
Al-Kufa University seminar highlights role of psychological counseling in tackling youth mental health issues
NAJAF — The College of Pharmacy at Al-Kufa University in Najaf hosted a seminar on Wednesday focusing on the importance of psychological counseling in addressing mental health issues in society, especially suicide. The event included discussions emphasizing that understanding the root causes of psychological problems can contribute to effective solutions.
Organizers highlighted the vital role of psychological and educational counselors in daily life, especially as individuals face increasing challenges due to social and economic pressures.
Speaking to 964media, students and faculty participants shared their views on the social challenges impacting youth mental health. Abdul Razaq Al-Janabi, a faculty member at Al-Kufa University, explained, “Suicide stems from a lack of faith and awareness, often driven by economic and social factors. Universities play a critical role inside and outside their campuses by offering consultations, identifying societal problems, and providing solutions.”
He added, “Psychological issues can sometimes be hereditary and require medical treatment, while others can be resolved through counseling sessions. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Youth has not adequately fulfilled its role in supporting young people by creating developmental opportunities in various fields. Many youths end up in coffee shops, which can lead to problems such as drug addiction.”
Iman Al-Fatlawi, Dean of the College of Medicine at Al-Kufa University, emphasized the seminar’s goals. “The purpose of these activities is to improve education and understand the issues students face in their academic journeys. These problems may stem from family dynamics, societal pressures, conflicts between parents, or difficulties with peers.”
She highlighted that psychological counseling is a vital tool to help students overcome their struggles and stated that Al-Kufa University is committed to raising awareness about its importance.
Saif Haider, a student, discussed unemployment as a key challenge facing young people. “The lack of job opportunities is one of the main issues confronting youth today. Psychological counseling is essential, especially for young people, as these challenges can lead to severe outcomes, including suicide, particularly in cases linked to divorce or other life events.”
