Tackling plastic waste
University of Sulaimani launches ‘Suli Without Plastic’ cleanup campaign
SULAYMANIYAH — The University of Sulaimani has launched “Suli Without Plastic,” a four-day campaign focused on reducing plastic waste in the city. The initiative, backed by both government and private sectors, involves student volunteers cleaning up public spaces to promote environmental awareness.
Dr. Soma Nawzad, a professor at the university’s Language College, said, “The University of Sulaymaniyah has always been committed to engaging students and the community in activities that benefit society.” She added that the campaign, led by the Language College, aims to clear plastic litter from university grounds, nearby parks, and cemeteries to improve the environment around Sulaymaniyah.
The campaign kicked off with 45 student volunteers attending a seminar at the Sulaymaniyah Cultural Museum. Following the seminar, students were divided into four teams, provided with trash bags, gloves, and masks, and dispatched to various locations around the university and surrounding areas to collect plastic and other debris.
