Centuries-old art form

Dhi Qar women revive macramé craft in workshops to boost business skills

DHI QAR — Once a popular craft used by Iraqi mothers to brighten the white walls of their homes, macramé is making a comeback in Souq Al-Shuyoukh, Dhi Qar, thanks to local workshops aimed at empowering women to start their own businesses.

Ilaf Lafta, a member of the “Mutooroon” team, has been leading efforts to revive the traditional art. She recently held a two-day workshop at the Souq Al-Shuyoukh Forum, teaching women to create colorful decorations using threads and wood. The initiative equips participants with a skill that can generate income.

Macramé, which originated with 13th-century Arab weavers, involves knotting threads to create decorative fringes. The term is derived from the Arabic word “migramah,” meaning embroidered veils. The craft spread from the Arab world to Spain, and eventually throughout Europe.

“I learned macramé through YouTube in 2023, but unfortunately, this art is not well-known in our society,” Lafta told 964media. “I’ve improved my skills and now teach this craft to other women.”

Demand for macramé is growing, particularly as it becomes integrated into modern décor. Lafta promotes her work through an Instagram account where she markets her creations. Materials such as threads and wood are available in local markets at affordable prices.

The designs taught in the workshop are often Lafta’s own, though she draws inspiration from online sources. Finished pieces are sold for between 10,000 and 15,000 Iraqi dinars ($6 to $10), making them accessible to a wide audience.

“This is a beautiful art form that can help women improve their livelihoods,” said participant Raja Abdulaziz. “Many women don’t have a profession, and this craft offers a simple yet rewarding opportunity that just requires focus.”

Traditionally, macramé was used to embellish clothing, household items, and even sailors’ gear. Sailors would use the technique to create hammocks, belts, and nets during long sea voyages, helping spread the craft globally.
