'Watches more than just tools for telling time'
Najaf man turns $81 into thriving vintage watch business through online auctions
NAJAF — Ali Adil, a 30-year-old from Al-Mishkhab in Najaf province, began his journey into the watch trade two years ago with a modest investment of 125,000 Iraqi dinars ($81). He purchased five vintage Japanese watches from a local auction, which marked the start of his now-thriving business.
Today, Adil sells watches via live auctions on Facebook, specializing in vintage timepieces, some as old as 75 years. His collection features a variety of Japanese, German, and Swiss watches, with prices ranging from 30,000 IQD ($19) to $1,000, depending on factors like the type of gold used, size, and the number of gemstones in each timepiece.
“I started this as a hobby, and over time, it became a profession. Watch trading doesn’t require a physical store; you can work from home through live broadcasts as long as you’re knowledgeable about the details and specifications of watches,” Adil told 964media.
He emphasized that watches are more than just functional tools—they represent elegance, particularly for men. Among his prized possessions is a 14-carat white gold Longines watch from 1926, which Adil had long dreamed of owning. Longines, a Swiss luxury watchmaker known for its precision and classic designs, is one of many prestigious brands in his collection, although he is yet to acquire a Rolex.
Adil’s venture has grown significantly, with his initial small investment now worth over 15 million dinars ($9,790). He has become a leading dealer of vintage and unique watches in his area, inspiring young people to enter commerce through their passion and skills.
“I rely on live broadcasts and personal meetings to promote the watches, and I enjoy a positive reputation and trust with the support of my friends and acquaintances,” Adil concluded.
