'Pen and paper only'
Kindergarten in Maysan’s Al-Qala’a Al-Salih promotes traditional learning methods
MAYSAN — While many kindergartens are adopting advanced technologies and modern teaching tools, Al-Ahd Kindergarten in Maysan’ Al-Qala’a Al-Salih district has taken a different path, emphasizing traditional educational methods with its motto: “Pen and Paper Only.”
The initiative, led by 24-year-old director Ahd Abdul Kareem, aims to enhance children’s skills and development while avoiding the potential negative effects of electronic devices.
“I wanted to introduce a different approach in dealing with children compared to other kindergartens,” Abdul Kareem told 964media. “I decided to keep them away from screens, mobile phones, and tablets, and instead focus on using paper, pens, blackboards, and colorful stories.”
The project began in 2020 with just 10 children in a modest facility. Over the years, it has grown, now hosting 35 children. Abdul Kareem, a mathematics graduate, emphasized that she conducted extensive research before launching the project and developed expertise in addressing children’s challenges.
“Many children showed signs of mild autism,” she explained. “With the help of three teachers, we improved their psychological well-being and kept them away from screens and mobile phones.”
Abdul Kareem also highlighted challenges such as children’s initial shyness and difficulty in integrating them into group settings. However, she stated that the kindergarten succeeded in helping children build confidence and social connections.
Parents have expressed their appreciation for the kindergarten, citing noticeable positive changes in their children’s behavior.
