Duhok cyclist rides 240km to reach the summit of Iraq’s second highest peak
ERBIL — A cyclist and mountaineer from Duhok has reached the summit of Mount Halgurd in the Soran Autonomous Administration on a bicycle, completing a journey of roughly 240 kilometers from his home city.
Ranj Amedi told 964media his bicycle is specially designed for mountain riding and that navigating rugged terrain has become routine. “It is easy to reach the mountains by bicycle,” he said. “For us in Kurdistan it is even easier as we are surrounded by mountains.” He added that the main challenge comes at high altitudes where oxygen levels drop.
Mount Halgurd stands at 3,607 meters, making it Iraq’s second highest peak after Cheekha Dar at 3,611 meters. The area draws tourists, hikers and climbers with its scenery, springs and snow-capped peaks.
