Iraqi speaker of parliament denies reports on election postponement
BAGHDAD — The office of Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani denied on Monday recent claims suggesting he had discussed the possibility of postponing the upcoming elections. The statement came in response to reports circulated by various media outlets, broadcast channels, and widely shared across social media platforms, which alleged that Mashhadani had made remarks indicating a potential delay in the electoral process.
The speaker’s office described these claims as “inaccurate and categorically false,” stressing that such reports misrepresent the Speaker’s stance and create unnecessary confusion among the public.
Iraq is scheduled to hold its next parliamentary elections in October 2025, which will determine the composition of the Council of Representatives. This body is responsible for electing the president and confirming the prime minister.
