Route stretches over 200 kilometers

Kurdistan region prepares to open its longest hiking trail

ERBIL, September 23 — The Kurdistan region’s Tourism Authority has completed preparations to open its longest hiking trail, where tourists can explore the region on foot. Stretching over 200 kilometers, this extensive trail concludes at Mount Halgurd in Erbil. The trail’s official inauguration is scheduled for next month.

The scenic route, designed for hikers, starts from the village of Shush in the Badinan area, culminating at the foothills of Mount Halgurd in Erbil. The trail covers a total distance of 215 kilometers, passing through 36 villages and five cities.

Ibrahim Abdulmajeed, from the region’s tourism board, told 964: “The nonprofit organization Kurdistan Trails, with assistance from the Kurdistan region Tourism Authority, has put the finishing touches on the dedicated hiking trail for tourists, set to be officially opened soon.”

Abdulmajeed said the trail route has been marked, allowing travelers to explore Kurdish culture, heritage, identity, and diverse cuisine as they walk along its course.

“The project encourages long-distance hiking or walking amidst the mountains, providing an opportunity to discover the nature of Kurdistan. The trail aims to attract foreign tourists and create job opportunities in the areas it passes through,” he added.
