Following operation in Darbandikhan
Teams assess waste at Dukan Dam, plan cleanup
SULAYMANIYAH — Teams from Iraq’s Water Protectors organization and the VIM Foundation recently visited the Dukan district, including the Dukan Dam, to assess waste accumulation similar to that seen at the Darbandikhan Dam.
Following the visit, the teams initiated plans for a cleanup operation. Bnwar Rizgar, a member of the Iraq Water Protectors team, told 964media, “The purpose of the visit was to plan for addressing the waste issue and cleaning up debris in the Dukan Dam.”
Dukan Dam is the largest dam in the Kurdistan Region and can hold 52 million cubic meters of water.
According to Rizgar, “The visible debris on the water surface is mostly plastic waste, although it is less than what is seen at the Darbandikhan Dam.”
After five days of work, on April 28, 2024, the cleanup operation at the Darbandikhan Dam concluded with approximately 250 tons of plastic waste and debris collected from the water.
Both the VIM Foundation and Kurdistan Nature Organization volunteered for the cleanup effort. Located on the Sirwan River in Darbandikhan, 65 kilometers southeast of Sulaymaniyah city, Darbandikhan Dam is the second largest in the Kurdistan Region, following Dukan Dam. It is used for power generation, agriculture and tourism.
