Soran authorities implement stricter safety measures after deadly fire

SORAN — Authorities in Soran are imposing stricter safety measures for student and faculty housing following a tragic fire last year that killed 14 and injured seven.

The devastating blaze on Dec. 8, 2023, in a central Soran residential building primarily affected lecturers and students, underscoring the critical need for enhanced safety protocols in educational housing facilities.

New regulations now mandate that buildings used for housing students and faculty be equipped with automatic fire suppression systems, water sprinklers, emergency exits, and adequate ventilation. Following recent inspections, seven buildings failed to meet these standards and were suspended from use.

Ravand Hawdiani, spokesperson for Soran’s Civil Defense and a member of the safety implementation committee, emphasized the necessity of the new measures. “The measures were prompted by last year’s building fire in Soran,” Hawdiani told 964media. “The committee, formed by the Ministry of Interior, aims to protect the lives of students and lecturers and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.”

Hawdiani also noted that the buildings referred to as dormitories are actually private sector buildings that the university rents for students and professors
