Barzani extends condolences to victims' families
KRG Prime Minister calls for immediate investigation into tragic Soran fire
ERBIL, December 9 — Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Masrour Barzani offered condolences to the families of victims of a fire at a residence associated with Soran University in northern Erbil governorate on Friday, urging relevant authorities to conduct an immediate investigation into the causes of the incident.
The government released a statement, which read:
Today, Friday, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, made a phone call to the director of the independent administration of Soran, Halkurd Najib, urging him to investigate the tragic fire incident that occurred in the building in Soran.
During the call, the Prime Minister, after expressing his deep condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, instructed the supervisor of Soran and relevant government institutions to do everything necessary to assist the victims of the incident and respond to their needs.
He also instructed them to conduct a comprehensive and serious investigation into the cause of this disaster and to monitor safety procedures in both public and private buildings.
The Soran Health Directorate announced on Friday that 14 people were killed and seven others were injured, all of them students and teachers, in a fire that broke out in a building identified as University housing there.
