'Joy' in caring for snakes
Renowned snake handler passes away, leaving behind a legacy of care
DUHOK — Abdulstar Amin, widely known as the “friend of snakes,” passed away on Thursday after battling heart-related health issues, leaving behind a unique legacy of caring for over 80 snakes of various species.
Abdulstar, a resident of Qasrok sub-district in Duhok governorate, dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to capturing, raising, and caring for snakes in his home. He passed away at the age of 57.
Mivan Kurdi, a relative of Abdulstar, told 964 media: “His health deteriorated in recent days due to heart problems, and today, he has left us. He leaves behind over 80 snakes, but his children will continue his legacy with care and expertise.”
During his lifetime, Abdulstar trained two of his children, Amin and Rayan, in the art of snake handling. They spent considerable time accompanying their father on snake-collecting expeditions in various locations.
In December 2022, Abdulstar shared with 964media that he had built a dedicated space in his home for raising snakes, housing ten different species.
“I find joy in caring for snakes. Whenever I see one, I catch it, bring it home, and add it to my collection, protecting them from harm and extinction,” he said.
“For 40 years, I’ve kept snakes, and none have ever harmed me, my family, or my home. Even my children have grown fond of them, and many people visit us just to see the snakes,” Abdulstar proudly added.
Among the species in his care was the Southern Black Racer, a non-venomous variety.
