Iraq tightens controls on imported goods to block substandard and expired products
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Ministry of Trade announced stricter measures Monday to prevent the entry of low-quality and expired imported goods, in coordination with border and regulatory authorities.
Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Hanoun told the Iraqi News Agency that all imported shipments are subject to laboratory testing and verification of certificates of origin, conformity and standard specifications, with non-compliant goods destroyed and legal action taken against violators.
Hanoun said authorities are also monitoring attempts to smuggle goods or bring them through unofficial crossings, describing the issue as requiring “joint national efforts” with security and oversight bodies. On plans to open new import outlets, he said any new crossing is subject to technical and logistical studies and coordination with relevant parties before becoming operational.
