Baghdad authorities launch crackdown on illegal parking lots
BAGHDAD – A major campaign targeting “fake garages” and individuals misusing sidewalks and streets in the Mansour neighborhood of Baghdad resulted in the arrest of 36 individuals, Baghdad Municipality said in a statement on Friday received by 964media.
Those arrested had extorted motorists for parking fees in front of clinics and restaurants, acting as if they owned the public spaces.
The apprehended individuals were handed over to the Mansour Police Station for legal proceedings before being presented to the Iraqi judiciary, according to the municipality.
The operation was conducted by the Baghdad Municipality Police, the Directorate of Guards and Security, and other local security forces.
The campaign also targeted the closure of other unlicensed garages, penalizing operators and those failing to renew their contracts.
