Three arrested for using counterfeit currency in Said Sadiq

SULAYMANIYAH — Police in Sulaymaniyah governorate have arrested three young men on charges of using counterfeit money in the local market of Said Sadiq, authorities announced Monday. The arrests followed a tip-off that led investigators from the city’s Criminal Prevention Office to identify and track the suspects across several stores where they allegedly circulated fake currency.

According to a statement from the Sulaymaniyah Police Directorate, officers began surveillance and obtained a court warrant before arresting the suspects. “They were caught in possession of a quantity of counterfeit cash at the time of arrest,” the statement said.

Authorities say the individuals, identified by their initials as P.K.S., age 18; M.B.M., 19; and R.E.M., 22, confessed to the crime and are now in custody pending further investigation under Article 289 of Iraq’s Penal Code, which addresses forgery and counterfeiting offenses. The statement noted that investigations are ongoing.
