Najaf governor vows justice after alleged assault by security forces
NAJAF — Gov. Youssef Kanawi on Friday addressed a video circulating on social media that appears to show security forces assaulting a civilian, allegedly members of his own security detail. The governor pledged personal oversight to ensure accountability and justice.
“I reject any insult or abuse by security forces against the dignity of the people of Najaf,” Kanawi said. “The law will take its course against anyone proven to be involved in such actions.”
The governor’s office issued a formal statement, referencing the ongoing security measures for the religious pilgrimage marking Laylat Al-Qadr and the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Ali. Laylat Al-Qadr is a sacred observance during the last 10 days of Ramadan, when Muslims remain awake in worship, prayer, and reflection.
“We are currently engaged in the security and service plan for this massive pilgrimage,” the statement read. “Governor Youssef Kanawi affirmed that any misconduct or abuse by participating security forces toward any citizen is completely unacceptable.”
Kanawi also emphasized that protecting citizens’ rights and dignity is a top priority, warning that any act disrupting the security plan or breaking the law will be dealt with promptly.
He added that he will “personally and directly follow up on all procedures to ensure justice is served, violators are held accountable, and victims receive redress.”
