'Dawoodi deserves better'

Residents urge Al-Mansour Municipality to repave Baghdad’s Tanki Street

BAGHDAD — Residents of the Dawoodi neighborhood in western Baghdad are urging the Al-Mansour Municipality to repave Tanki Street, which has become riddled with potholes and cracks, causing significant damage to vehicles.

Similar conditions exist in several nearby alleys. An official from the Baghdad Municipality told 964media that plans to rehabilitate the area, along with 50 other areas, are ready and awaiting budget funds.

A resident, Atheer Hassan, expressed frustration, saying, “Despite the numerous restaurants and commercial projects, Tanki Street is in terrible condition. The potholes and cracks extend along the entire street, damaging our vehicles.”

“I have to repair my car every six months due to these holes, and we do not understand the delay in repaving despite many promises from officials,” he added.

Another resident, Sara Al-Mousawi, highlighted the long period of neglect, “Our streets haven’t been repaved for 44 years. We suffer greatly when it rains as the streets flood, making the area seem remote due to the large potholes.”

“Dawoodi deserves better than such dilapidated streets, and we are waiting for the municipality’s promises to be fulfilled,” Al-Mousawi stated.

Adi Kazem Talib, Deputy Director General of Relations and Media in the Baghdad Municipality, told 964media that this area is included in this year’s paving plans by the Projects Department. “The entire 611 area will be rehabilitated, not just specific alleys. This includes sidewalks, removing old pavement, and applying two new layers to make it exemplary. Work will begin soon after contracting with a specialized company.”

Talib added, “We are only waiting for the budget approval and fund release to start the development and paving process. This is part of the Baghdad Municipality’s plan and the Mayor’s initiative to redevelop and pave more than 50 areas within Baghdad this year.”
