Severe water shortages plague Karbala neighborhoods
KARBALA — Residents of several neighborhoods in the Al-Hur district, located approximately 4 kilometers west of Karbala, are enduring severe water shortages, leaving them without adequate water for days. The affected areas include Al-Yarmouk 4, Al-Amir 2, and Al-Jawad, with the issue persisting for years despite numerous appeals to local water authorities.
In interviews with 964media, locals expressed their desperation. Mahmoud Jaber, the mukhtar of Al-Yarmouk 4, reported that about 7,200 residents across 1,400 families have been affected. “Water has not reached the homes in Al-Yarmouk for days,” Jaber stated.
Saleh Hassan from Al-Amir 2 emphasized the chronic nature of the crisis, noting that more than 100 houses in his neighborhood suffer while nearby areas receive water. “We have appealed to every official in Karbala without success,” Hassan said.
The frustration has driven some residents to consider selling their homes, while others have resorted to purchasing water from tankers. Qusay Kazem, another affected resident, criticized the sporadic water supply and the lack of intervention by authorities. “Water [flow] arrives weak and sporadic at 4 a.m., and we haven’t been able to bathe for three days,” Kazem explained.
Zahir Aidan, a local official, attributed the current disruption to a malfunction at the Al-Askari station, which receives its supply from a station in the Al-Amn Al-Dakhili area.
“Our station staff are working to repair the malfunction and restore the water supply as quickly as possible,” Aidan insisted.
