Disruption in supply
Nasiriyah residents demand replacement of new water pipeline after multiple bursts
DHI QAR — Members and elders of the Al-Azeirj tribes protested in front of the Dhi Qar Governorate building on Monday, calling for the urgent replacement of a recently installed water pipeline in the Ur subdistrict, north of Nasiriyah. The pipeline, inaugurated just five months ago, has suffered multiple bursts, disrupting water supply due to its inability to handle the water pressure.
Murtada Al-Azeirjawi, a participant in the protest, expressed frustration over the lack of governmental attention to their region. “Our main demand is for the replacement of the water project pipeline, which has proved inadequate and burst multiple times since its inauguration, leaving us without water for extended periods,” Al-Azeirjawi told 964media.
Ali Al-Azeirjawi, another protester, shared his initial optimism and subsequent disappointment with the project. “The pipeline, intended to supply several areas and villages, failed less than five months after its completion due to significant defects causing repeated failures,” he said.
The community’s pleas for intervention have been ignored, prompting the demonstration in hopes of eliciting a response from local officials.
Salama Al-Serhid, Dhi Qar’s Deputy Governor for Services, responded to the grievances stating, “The local government is committed to addressing citizens’ demands, especially those that are legitimate. We are prioritizing the Al-Azeirj areas and will closely monitor all service-related issues in the governorate to resolve them sequentially.”
