Over 20,000 tons expected

Duhok sees extensive rice cultivation this year

DUHOK — Duhok Governorate has planted more than 4,942 acres of land with rice this year, according to Ahmad Jameel, head of Duhok’s agriculture department. Jameel projects a yield of over 20,000 tons of rice from this cultivation.

The bulk of rice farming activities in Duhok is centered in the Akre district, which accounts for 3,089 acres. The remaining 1,853 acres are spread across the districts of Duhok, Bardarash, and Amedi.

Jameel noted that local farmers grow both long-grain and short-grain varieties of rice. He expects the harvest to be completed by the end of September. “This year, we anticipate producing more than 20,000 tons of rice in Duhok,” Jameel stated.

Ali Mohammed, a vendor at a dry goods market, told 964media that while he sells both local Akre rice and imported varieties, Akre rice remains the most sought after. Prices range from 2,500 to 4,500 dinars (around $1.7 to $3.10) per kilogram.

In comparison, last year saw 4,852 acres of land in Duhok used for rice cultivation.
