Cultural gallery in Baghdad suspended due to heat

BAGHDAD – Majid Gallery in Baghdad has suspended its cultural sessions until August due to high temperatures and to ensure the health of attendees, announced director Kifah Abdul Majid.

Majid Gallery is situated within the residence of artist Kifah Abdul Majid, whose family members were executed by the former regime due to their leftist ties. She has converted a section of the house, previously seized by the Baathist security forces, into a cultural center. Every Friday, this center hosts a variety of artistic, cultural, political, and social events aimed at fostering critical dialogue and thinking.

“We have stopped the cultural evenings at the center until August due to the high temperatures, considering the health of the guests,” Majid told 964media.

Iraq is currently grappling with soaring temperatures. On the first day of summer, temperatures in eight southern Iraqi provinces surpassed 50 degrees Celsius, according to the Iraqi Meteorological Agency.

Despite the presence of cooling devices, the heat caused discomfort among attendees, many of whom were elderly, prompting some to leave early. This led Majid to pause the sessions out of respect for the guests’ comfort.

“Everyone agreed with the decision because I sensed a lack of desire among the attendees to come to the next evening,” Majid added.

The last lecture, by Professor Fawzi Abdul Rahim, focused on the failures of political work in Iraq.

After the hiatus, the center plans to introduce a new segment titled “Recommended Book.” This segment will encourage guests to purchase a book agreed upon with a specific publishing house, which will then be the focus of a discussion session.
