Demanding dismissal of qaymaqam

Residents of Diwaniyah’s Al-Mahnawiyah district protest against deteriorating local services

DIWANIYAH – Residents of the Al-Mahnawiyah district, located 42 kilometers east of Diwaniyah, protested on Wednesday to express their frustration over deteriorating services and a failing electricity network. They also renewed calls for the replacement of the qaymaqam – or district chief – Ali Al-Zamili, who has held the position almost uninterrupted for 20 years.

During the protest, Layth Al-Janabi, a member of the protest coordination team, spoke to 964media, highlighting the long-standing issues facing the district. “We protested today against the general deterioration of services in Al-Mahnawiyah district, particularly electricity. The Governor of Diwaniya was supposed to meet the protesters, but he was occupied with the Minister of Reconstruction’s visit to Diwaniya,” Al-Janabi said.

Protesters plan to present their demands to the governor on Thursday, along with a timeline for addressing these issues.

Al-Janabi criticized the district chief’s long tenure and lack of progress. “The statements and promises of the qaymaqam have remained unchanged for 20 years, without any benefit or change. We hold him responsible for the deterioration of services in the district,” he stated.

Ali Al-Zamili has served as the qaymaqam of Al-Mahnawiyah since 2004. Following numerous protests by locals demanding his dismissal, he was replaced in May 2022. However, he was reinstated to his position a few months later.

Al-Zamili also addressed the challenges facing the district, particularly concerning the electricity supply. “Regarding the electricity crisis, we face significant challenges, foremost of which is the reduction of Diwaniya’s budget by 78% from last year, complicating the situation,” he explained.

The protesters’ demands include improving electricity supply, increasing service hours in agricultural areas, constructing a hospital approximately 42 kilometers from Diwaniyah’s center, rehabilitating infrastructure and streets, and reducing unemployment rates.
