Child dies after falling into old fish pond in Khanaqin

KHANAQIN – A 5-year-old child was pronounced dead Monday evening after falling into an old fish pond in the Qolai area, located in the southern part of Khanaqin, officials said.

The child’s body was transported to the public hospital in Khanaqin, where Shwan Shakir, the hospital director, confirmed the incident to 964media. “At 7 p.m., the body of the child was brought to our hospital,” Shakir said. He added that after routine procedures were completed, the body was sent to Baqubah for forensic examination.

This incident follows another tragedy nearly a week earlier when a 3-year-old child drowned in a pond in the village of Mirawa, located in the Penjwen district of Sulaymaniyah. The pond, typically used for water storage, was enclosed; however, the child managed to gain access and subsequently drowned.
