Man arrested under suspicion of running organ trafficking network

DIWANIYAH — The Federal Intelligence Investigation Agency has arrested a man accused of managing a human organ trafficking network in Diwaniyah governorate, officials announced Tuesday.

According to the agency, intelligence officers carried out the operation based on detailed intelligence information. They apprehended the suspect, who allegedly used social media platforms to recruit participants for the organ trafficking network.

“The operation was executed by intelligence officers based on precise intelligence information,” the agency stated. “The operation resulted in the apprehension of a suspect who was managing the network by luring citizens through social media platforms.”

During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to running the trafficking operation for financial gain.

Authorities have since transferred the individual to the proper legal authorities to face charges. No additional details have been released.

Iraq instituted a law in 2012 aimed at curbing organ trafficking. Despite this, challenges persist. A 2022 report by The Washington Institute for Near East Policy noted that factors such as poverty, unemployment, and the sway of militias, which oversee trade networks, continue to fuel the rise in organ trafficking. The report also pointed to inadequate legal frameworks and security institutions as contributing to the problem.
