Five from one family hurt as ride collapses at Diyala park

DIYALA — Five members of the same family, including women and children, were injured when an amusement ride collapsed at Jalawla Family Park in northeastern Diyala shortly after midnight on Wednesday, hospital officials said.

Jalawla Hospital received five injured people after the collapse, its media director Abdullah Hussein told 964media. “The injuries included fractures, cuts and bruises,” he said. “Medical teams provided the necessary treatment, and all of the injured are in stable condition. There are no serious injuries.” He said the incident had raised concern locally and pointed to the need for stricter safety measures at amusement facilities, including regular technical inspections before rides are operated.

Authorities have not said what caused the collapse, whether the ride had been inspected, or whether the park remains open. An investigation is expected.

Rides have failed elsewhere in Iraq despite inspection. In March 2025 a ride collapsed at Moonlight Amusement Park in Karbala, injuring seven people including four women and two children, two days after civil defense teams had inspected the park; the governorate then closed all its amusement parks. In May this year civil defense authorities detained the operator of a Baghdad park after 11 people were stranded on the Star Flyer ride, saying it had been operating despite unresolved safety requirements identified in an earlier inspection.
