Tuesday meeting planned
Kurdistan Region presidency, Iraqi election commission to discuss new election date
NEWSROOM — The Kurdistan Region Presidency and the Independent High Electoral Commission are set to meet on Tuesday to discuss “establishing a new date” for the much-anticipated Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
A source from the IHEC informed 964media that the Kurdistan presidency has proposed a timeline for the elections that aligns with the Commission’s schedule. The meeting on Tuesday aims to finalize this new date.
Yesterday, Hassan Hadi, a member of IHEC’s communications team, announced that, “All preparations for the elections have been completed, and only the printing of the ballot papers remains once a new date is set.”
On Wednesday, the Iraqi parliament voted to extend IHEC’s term by six months to oversee the elections in the Kurdistan Region. The current commission’s term was set to expire on July 7, 2024, but the extension ensures the commission will continue its duties until January 6, 2025.
The extension of the Commission’s work has provided an opportunity to determine a new date for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections. The initially scheduled date was June 10, 2024, but this may be postponed due to a lack of consensus among political parties and the recommencement of biometric registration by the commission.
The Iraqi Parliament has recently approved the second reading of the Independent High Electoral Commission law. This commission is tasked with overseeing and conducting the sixth round of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
