Says IHEC’s communication team member

‘All preparations for the elections have been completed’

NEWSROOM – The Independent High Electoral Commission has nearly completed preparations for the upcoming Kurdistan parliamentary elections, a member of the commission’s communications team announced.

Hassan Hadi, a member of IHEC’s communications team, told Al-Sabah newspaper, “All preparations for the elections have been completed, and only the printing of the ballot papers remains once a new date is set.”

IHEC is responsible for supervising and conducting the sixth round of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.

On Wednesday, the Iraqi Parliament voted to extend IHEC’s term by six months to oversee the elections in the Kurdistan Region. The current commission’s term was set to expire on July 7, 2024, but the extension ensures the commission will continue its duties until January 6, 2025.

This extension provides an opportunity to set a new date for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections. The initially scheduled date was June 10, 2024, but this may be postponed due to a lack of consensus among political parties and the recommencement of biometric registration by the commission.

It remains uncertain when the elections will be held, but a new date is expected to be announced soon. The extension of IHEC’s mandate allows for flexibility in accommodating a later date if the poll is postponed again.
