Despite dozens of rescues
Erbil reports 15 fire-related deaths, nine drownings in first half of 2024
ERBIL – In the first half of 2024, 15 residents in Erbil lost their lives due to fires, while nine others drowned, according to statistics provided by Shakhawan Saeed, a spokesperson for Erbil Civil Defense. The data covers the period from January 1, 2024, to July 1, 2024.
In January, there were six fire-related deaths, followed by one in February, four in April, three in May, and one in June, totaling 15 deaths. Civil defense teams rescued 69 individuals from fire-related incidents during this period.
Regarding drownings, no incidents were reported in January or February, but there were two in March, three in April, two in May, and two in June, totaling nine drownings. In addition to these deaths by drowning cases, Civil defense teams rescued 27 individuals from drowning during this time.
The Civil Defense Directorate reported 40 drowning deaths across the Kurdistan Region by June 29, 2024. Last year, more than 100 drownings were recorded throughout the region.
The Joint Crisis Coordination Center in the Kurdistan Region recently convened to address the increasing number of drowning incidents. They reviewed safety protocols and high-risk locations, recommending improvements to relevant authorities.
