Turkish, Iranian bombardments increase over last quarter
NEWSROOM — Recent data from the US-based Community Peacemaker Teams reveals Turkey has carried out 241 bombardments in the Kurdistan Region in the last three months, with Iran launching 15 additional attacks.
On the evening of March 7, a Turkish airstrike targeted three civilians in Bereskê village, within Amedi’s Shiladze sub-district, as they gathered spring herbs in the Zêbarian mountain. The strike resulted in two deaths and one critically injured. The victims, family men, were aged between 35 and 40.
In a separate incident yesterday in Sinjar, Turkish aircraft struck a position of the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS) in Sikeniya village.
Kamaran Mala Osman, the Director of Human Rights at CPT, provided specifics on the bombardments, noting the majority occurred in the Dohuk governorate, with 116 attacks. Sulaymaniyah and Erbil faced 35 and 86 strikes, respectively, with an additional four in Mosul.
These incidents included 201 fighter jet attacks, 12 drone strikes, and 28 artillery bombardments, leading to four civilian deaths and one injury.
Turkey’s airstrikes, often justified by alleged presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and affiliates, have been a point of contention. CPT’s monitoring highlights that in 2023 alone, military operations and airstrikes resulted in 11 civilian deaths and 13 injuries.
The report also details Iran’s military activities, with 15 attacks primarily targeting Erbil governorate and one in Sulaymaniyah. These attacks consisted of nine missile strikes, four drone attacks, and two cross-border gunfire incidents.
