Millions of dollars in damagers

Fire damages warehouse in Erbil industrial area

ERBIL – A significant fire erupted early this morning in an Erbil warehouse, causing millions of dollars in damage. The warehouse, storing decorative items, electrical supplies, and construction materials, is located in the industrial zone near Sheikh Ahmad Cemetery.

Akar Sabir, a co-owner of the affected warehouse, attributed the blaze to an electrical short circuit in the building’s rear. He estimates the financial impact to be in the millions.

After about four hours, firefighting crews managed to extinguish the fire. Karwan Mirawdali, a spokesperson for Erbil’s Civil Defense, reported that 16 firefighting teams, with additional support from the electricity department and municipal services, were deployed. Their efforts contained the fire, preventing any casualties.

The presence of highly flammable materials like asphalt felt and foam inside the warehouse exacerbated the fire. The Civil Defense received the alert at 6:58 am and quickly responded, although the scale posed significant challenges.

Local residents and shop owners near the warehouse also helped in the firefighting efforts. While witnesses believe an electrical short circuit ignited the fire, the civil defense has not officially confirmed the cause.
