Basra inaugurates new garbage bag factory with aims to improve waste management

BASRA — The Abu Al-Khaseeb municipality in Basra inaugurated a new garbage bag factory on Monday, aiming to address waste management challenges in the city.

Jamal Al-Tuwaiher, the municipality’s mayor, announced operations were underway at the factory, which was established in October 2023 with an investment of 334 million Iraqi dinars (approximately $255,000 USD).

“The factory utilizes high-quality standards and professional-grade equipment,” explained Al-Tuwaiher. “It has the capacity to increase production based on the municipality’s needs.”

The factory produces 1,500 to 2,000 garbage bags daily, which are stored and then distributed free of charge to local residents by municipal teams.

Area resident Mohammed Yass told 964media he was happy with news of the project, calling it a positive step forward in contributing to the development of both local industry and the public sector. He further emphasized the need for a waste recycling plant to complement the project and enhance Basra’s overall sanitation.

Waste management remains a significant concern for municipalities across Iraq, with littering and uncontrolled dumping persisting as common issues.

Residents in various areas have attributed garbage accumulation to municipal inefficiency and lack of oversight, while other locations have faced issues with performance of contracted waste management companies.
