Four dead, 28 injured
Chamchamal traffic directorate reports 24 incidents in two months
CHAMCHAMAL — The Traffic Directorate in Chamchamal reported to 964media that 24 traffic incidents occurred within its jurisdiction in the past two months, averaging about one incident every two days.
These incidents resulted in four fatalities and injuries to 28 individuals. The majority were collisions, with some attributed to poor road conditions.
Omar Ali, Director-General of the Chamchamal Traffic Directorate, cited the poor condition of roads as a significant factor in the high rate of incidents. Of the 24 incidents, there were 13 collisions, 10 overturns, and one instance of skidding.
Ali noted, “Reckless driving, using mobile phones while driving, and ignoring traffic laws were the primary causes of these incidents.”
The incidents occurred throughout the area, with 17 in central Chamchamal, four in Sangaw, two in the Agjalar sub-district, and one in Tekia Jebbari.
Notably, on Feb. 9, two traffic accidents happened on the road between Chamchamal and Sangaw, injuring 13 people.
Dr. Sherif Rahim, Deputy Director of Chamchamal Health, confirmed the incidents to 964media, stating, “The injured include four men, five women, and four children, with a 37-year-old woman being transferred to Sulaymaniyah due to the severity of her injuries.”
The incidents were caused by collisions near Qarach’s main road. One accident involved a collision between a pickup truck and a small private car.
Last month, Sulaymaniyah Forensic Medicine Directorate reported that traffic accidents in Sulaymaniyah were the leading cause of death in the governorate of Sulaymaniyah last year, resulting in 140 fatalities, with more than 83% of those who died on the road being male.
