Kurdish legal lexicon nearing completion
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region’s Judicial Council is nearing completion on a Kurdish legal lexicon, which contains around 17,000 legal terms and phrases. A specialized committee, consisting of members from the Parliament, the Integrity Commission, the Kurdish Academy, and the Judicial Council itself, is finalizing the comprehensive lexicon.
On Tuesday, the Judicial Council announced plans for the committee to visit various official organizations within the region. The goal is to discuss the adoption and support of the lexicon, with an eye towards its official release at an upcoming ceremony.
The council’s announcement also noted that, once approved and published, the lexicon would become accessible to courts, government institutions, and universities.
This effort aims to facilitate the ‘Kurdification’ of legal proceedings and documents within the region’s administrative framework.
Currently, court decisions are primarily issued in Arabic, despite over 30 years of Kurdish self-rule. The introduction of the Kurdish legal lexicon represents a significant move toward increasing the use of Kurdish in legal matters.
