Bird theft on the rise in Diyala, prompting breeders to install surveillance cameras

DIYALA — Bird enthusiasts in Diyala governorate are grappling with a rise in theft, particularly during the colder months when streets are quieter, according to local media reports.

Khalis and Hibhab are among the areas reporting a surge in thefts, coinciding with the winter season’s increased bird trading activity. This presents a lucrative opportunity for thieves, as some birds can fetch over $1,000 a pair, as noted by Ali Farhan, a bird enthusiast interviewed by 964media.

Breeders, targeted for valuable pigeons, red birds, wild turkeys, and geese, have begun implementing security measures to combat these thefts, with some installing surveillance cameras. Mohammed Al-Mahdawi, a breeder who fell victim to theft, shared his experience with 964media.

“Every winter, as bird prices climb, we become targets,” Al-Mahdawi said explaining that he installed cameras after experiencing a theft, which allowed him to identify the culprits and recover his birds during a second incident.

Al-Mahdawi also highlighted the seasonal aspect of bird breeding, attributing the winter surge in thefts to the increased popularity of the hobby during cooler months. Birds are generally less appealing to maintain in the summer heat.

To deter thefts, many breeders, like Al-Mahdawi, have installed surveillance cameras near or inside their enclosures.

Additionally, competitive bird races and contests further adds to the value of the birds and the incentive for theft.

Authorities have not yet commented on the reported rise in bird thefts, and the extent of the problem remains unclear. However, breeders in Diyala are taking matters into their own hands by implementing security measures to protect their valuable birds.
