Heavy rains damage potato crops in Bardarash, Duhok

BARDARASH, DuUHOK – Recent heavy rainfall in the Bardarash and Kalakchi areas has led to flooding, significantly damaging the potato crops, a staple agricultural output of the region. According to Hussein Goran, the director of the agricultural office in Bardarash, the adverse weather conditions have affected approximately 17 acres of newly planted potato fields.

Goran disclosed the extent of the damage to 964media, noting that the assessment was based on reports from local farmers who have directly experienced losses due to the flooding. “The statistics are obtained from telephone calls made by farmers themselves after the loss they faced in Bardarash,” he stated, emphasizing the critical nature of the situation for the local agricultural community.

Bardarash is well-known for its potato production, which is a key component of the area’s agricultural industry. Last year, the region reported an impressive output of more than 300,000 tons of potatoes. Out of 9,142 acres of cultivated land in Bardarash, 6,177 acres were dedicated to potato farming, underscoring the significance of this crop to the local economy and food supply.

The recent flooding represents a setback for farmers in Bardarash, who rely heavily on potato cultivation for their livelihoods. The agricultural office is currently assessing the full impact of the damage as the community begins to recover from the effects of the heavy rains.
