Chance of overflow is low
Recent rainfall boosts water levels in Dukan dam
DUKAN — Recent heavy rainfall has directly impacted water levels in the Kurdistan Region’s dams, including Dukan dam, which is crucial for water supply across the country.
Located on the Little Zab River, the Dukan dam relies on rainwater as well as inflow from neighboring Iran.
Taifur Hussein from the dam’s hydrology department spoke to 964media, stating, “Currently, the dam holds two billion cubic meters of water, though it has a capacity of seven billion cubic meters. We can ensure water security, releasing 70 cubic meters of water per second back into the lower part of the dam.”
He also stated that due to summer water allocations, only one unit of the hydroelectric power station is operational.
Despite rising water levels, the dam is not expected to overflow or reach its spillway.
The Dukan dam is one of the largest dams in the Kurdistan Region, situated within Dukan district.
