Chamber of commerce seeks upped supply, lower tariffs for factories

SULAYMANIYAH – The Sulaymaniyah Chamber of Commerce has urged the Sulaymaniyah Electricity Directorate to extend the electricity supply hours for factories and to lower the tariffs, which have adversely affected production.

On Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, an executive council member of the chamber met with officials from the General Directorate of Sulaymaniyah Electricity. The meeting highlighted concerns about decreased production levels in factories due to restricted electricity supply hours and the prohibitive cost of fuel for generator operation.

The Chamber’s representatives sought a reassessment to prolong the national electricity availability to factories.

“Factory owners are particularly troubled by the steep electricity costs. We have relayed their concerns to the electricity directorate, advocating for reduced rates to boost local production and generate more employment opportunities,” stated the Sulaymaniyah Chamber of Commerce.

The announcement also noted the directorate’s support for the factory owners, with promises to consider their requests, especially regarding extending electricity supply hours.

Efforts by 964media to gather specific details on the current daily electricity supply hours to factories and the conditions preceding this issue were unsuccessful. Officials from the Sulaymaniyah Electricity Distribution Directorate refrained from commenting due to not being authorized to talk to reporters.
